Homeschooling, also known as home education or elective home education, is the education of school-aged children at home or a variety of places other than school. Here at Katie Lamb Public Library we strive to support our local homeschoolers in anyway we can!

Assessing your child's needs
Identify your child’s strengths, interests, and any specific learning challenges to tailor your curriculum accordingly.
Explore what motivates your student – do they love hands-on experiences or watching and listening.

How to define your educational philosophy?
First, take a minute to write out your WHY statement. This can be your mission statement or purpose statement describing your conviction that homeschooling is the right path for your family.
Second, take the time to write HOW you will teach your children. This will become your educational philosophy.

Methods of Homeschool
Consider different homeschooling approaches like Charlotte Mason, Montesorri, Classical, or Traditional to find what aligns with your child’s learning style.
Selecting a Curriculum
Finding a homeschool curriculum that fits your family and lifestyle is so important.
The curriculum you select should support your family’s needs, your personality, your educational philosophy, and your child’s learning preferences considering options like pre-made programs, online learning platforms, or a combination of materials.
TIP: Don’t be afraid to test drive the curriculum – use the free trial or free download and try a few lessons with your student!
How to Create a Schedule
Create a structured schedule that incorporates learning activities and socialization opportunities.
Plan a daily or weekly schedule, allocating time for different subjects while considering flexibility to adjust based on you child’s progress.
Incorporating Hands-On Learning
Plan and utilize fields trips, experiments, projects, and real-world experiences to enhance learning.
Community Opportunities
Find ways to facilitate social interaction through homeschool co-ops, extracurricular activities, or online communities.
Creating a Portfolio
CRHE presents Creating a Homeschool Portfolio
Families may choose to maintain a portfolio of your child’s work, including assignments, tests, and observations to demonstrate progress.
Start by choosing a traditional 3-Ring binder or a digital platform to create your portfolio. (Evernote or Seesaw are great apps to check out for this)
Next, you can choose to include any paperwork required by the state. This may include:
-
- Letter of Intent
- Attendance Records
- Instructional Hours
- Curriculum Used
Place lesson plans, sample lessons, or learning objectives here.
Create a section for each academic subject. You do not need to include every bit of work completed, but it can be helpful to pick a few times throughout the year for sampling. This is a great way to show growth.
Include the student’s booklist in your next section. It will be impossible to list every single book read. Instead try to list titles that demonstrate variety.
Build a section displaying your child’s extracurricular activities such as athletics, clubs, music, theatre, and more!
Portfolios offer a lot of flexibility. Other sections you might want to create for your student are: Community service hours, co-op classes, field trips, and even technology skills.
